5 Tips to Improve English Vocabulary

1. Read Regularly:

Reading continuously enrich your English vocabulary as you go through different words in different context. When you read any text you come across new words that you understand through its compositionality or the collocates and some strong association of the vocabulary with a context is developed in your mind. Thus, whenever, you come across any context, the association will retrieve that word from the lexicon. However, reading different genre will be more imperative in vocabulary development. 

2. Keep a Vocabulary Journal:

Keeping a vocabulary journal with you can be an effective way to enrich your English vocabulary and whenever, you go through a text and come across new vocabulary just jot down that word in your diary with your own understanding and wording. Most of the people remember or easily retrieve the vocabularies from the lexicon that they have written no matter whether they have read it again. 

3. Practice Word Games and Puzzles:

Engage in activities like crossword puzzles, word searches, and word games to make learning vocabulary more enjoyable and interactive because, human mind remembers those things that it heard in exciting or worst situations. Playing word games can significantly increase your English vocabulary and you will crave for more vocabularies when you learn it with fun. Secondly, it is the nature of human that they are prone to do things in which they feel sense of achievements as in the games when you complete a level or when you give the correct answers you feel sense of achievement that ultimately increase your craving to do it with more excitement.   

4. Learn Root Words, Prefixes, and Suffixes:

Word formation process is one of the best way to multiply your English vocabulary. All you need to learn is how to convert a verb into noun, how can we make new words from the base words and how can we use a single word with different part of speech. For example, happy, sad, shy etc are adjectives however, adding the suffix “ness” makes them noun as happiness, sadness and shyness. Thus, this method would be one of the most effective way to enrich your English Vocabulary.

5. Use Vocabulary in Writing:

You might heard the quote: Practice makes man perfect. When you practice incorporating new words into your writing, whether it's through essays, emails, or creative writing exercises, you will never forget those vocabularies because once you used the vocabulary in a context you do not have to memorize the word, rather the context will automatically retrieve the word from your lexicon.
